Ashura has a long history in Afghanistan, but there have been many changes in the way it is held in recent years. In the not-so-distant past, Ashura ceremonies were mostly held in Husseiniyahs, and people gathered in Husseiniyahs to sit at the pulpit of clerics, beat their breasts, and weep while listening to the prayers. Thus, the Ashura ceremony was limited to the Hosseiniyahs, and this 4-day mourning ceremony was very simple.

But in recent years, the Ashura ceremony has come out of the Husseins. Today, Ashura is celebrated more than Husseiniyahs in the city. In the predominantly Shiite cities of Afghanistan, special gates have been built at crossroads. These gates are made of metal rods that the buildings use when building tall buildings, and then black cloth is drawn on them. On these cloths, pictures of the martyrs of Karbala are installed. Many of these gates are similar.

Private cars often carry special flags with the words "either Hussein martyr" or "Aba Abdullah" or "Qamar Bani Hashem" or "martyr of Karbala" and dozens of special Muharram flags and photos.

Similar flags and slogans can be seen on the pillars or beams of the walls of some public buildings, the windows of houses and shops.
